Recent Press Reading List: The Summer of the Motel

The rest of the world is catching on to what we at Nomada have known for a while now — motels are back and better than ever. Once upon a time, humble motels might never have been featured in esteemed publications like The Los Angeles Times, AFAR Magazine, or The Zoe Report. But today, the narrative has shifted. Motels are no longer seen as just simple roadside stops; they’re recognized as cultural icons and design destinations in their own right. The proof is in print:

★ The Los Angeles Times’ Chris Reynold took a 2,500-mile roadtrip in search of the greatest motels in California — Skyview, Hotel Ynez, Farmhouse, and River Lodge all made the cut. The LA Times highlighted the charm that makes these motels so special: “Retro signs, wallpaper and keys. At these motels, the delight is in the details” in an additional photo essay.

The Zoe Report included Skyview on their 2025 list of “Chic, Revamped Motels [That] Are Blowing Up,” praising its fresh yet timeless appeal.

AFAR Magazine dedicated a special edition of their Hotels We Love series to motels, spotlighting 14 of California’s most beautiful—including Skyview, Hotel Ynez, and River Lodge.
