Skyview’s Guide to the Sky: April Edition
A MONTHLY LOOK AT WHAT’S HAPPENING ABOVE THE CENTRAL COAST
At Skyview Los Alamos, the sky isn’t just a backdrop — it’s part of the experience. From golden sunsets to star-filled nights, the wide-open skies above the Santa Ynez Valley offer some of the best stargazing on California’s Central Coast.
Each month in Skyview’s Guide to the Sky, we highlight a few things to look for overhead — from meteor showers and bright planets to rocket launches up the coast. Step outside, look up, and let the night put on a show.
Here’s what April has in store above the Central Coast.
🌌 Notable Sky Events This Month
Lyrid Meteor Shower — Peak April 21–22
One of spring’s most reliable meteor showers, the Lyrids can produce around 10–20 shooting stars per hour under dark skies. Look for quick, bright streaks radiating from the constellation Lyra.
Best viewing: After midnight through dawn, when the sky is darkest.
Venus & Jupiter Close Pairing — Early April (around April 10–11)
Two of the brightest objects in the night sky appear unusually close together just after sunset. This rare pairing creates a striking visual low on the western horizon.
What to look for: Two brilliant “stars” shining side by side shortly after sunset.
Milky Way Season Begins — Late April
By the end of the month, the faint band of the Milky Way begins to return to the pre-dawn sky. While still subtle, it marks the start of prime galaxy-viewing season on the Central Coast.
Best viewing: Early morning hours before sunrise, away from lights.
🪐 Planet Watch
This month, keep an eye out for:
Venus – shining brightly in the western sky just after sunset
Jupiter – visible near Venus early in the month before gradually setting earlier each night
Saturn – rising in the early morning hours before sunrise in the southeast
Guests who want a closer look can enhance their stay with our Unistellar telescope experience, revealing galaxies, nebulae, and planetary details far beyond what the naked eye can see.
🚀 Rocket Launches from Vandenberg
Just up the coast at Vandenberg Space Force Base, rocket launches regularly light up the Central Coast sky.
When launches are scheduled this month, guests may see a SpaceX Falcon 9 streaking over the Pacific shortly after liftoff. Sunset launches are especially spectacular, sometimes creating glowing “space jellyfish” trails across the sky.
Tip: Check the launch schedule during your stay — you might catch one from the pool deck.
🌑 Best Stargazing Nights
For the darkest skies of the month, plan your stargazing around the New Moon on April 27. With little moonlight, faint stars and distant galaxies become easier to spot — perfect for an evening on the Skyview hillside.
🌕 April 30: Moonrise Swim at Skyview
The April Full Moon rises on April 30, bringing one of the most luminous and symbolic moonrises of the season. Known as the Flower Moon, this full moon is named for the abundance of wildflowers that bloom across North America this time of year — a reflection of nature at its peak.
On April 30th, DJ Musicabound sets the soundtrack at Moonrise Swims as we welcome the Flower Moon. This springtime moon celebrates life in full bloom — inviting love, abundance, and connection — a night to gather, move, and soak in the energy of the season under the stars.
