Skyview’s Guide to the Sky: October Edition

A MONTHLY LOOK AT WHAT’S HAPPENING ABOVE THE CENTRAL COAST

At Skyview Los Alamos, the sky isn’t just a backdrop — it’s part of the experience. From golden sunsets to star-filled nights, the wide-open skies above the Santa Ynez Valley offer some of the best stargazing on California’s Central Coast.

Each month in Skyview’s Guide to the Sky, we highlight a few things to look for overhead — from meteor showers and bright planets to rocket launches up the coast. Step outside, look up, and let the night put on a show. This October, look for Saturn at its brightest, shooting stars beneath nearly moonless skies and the glow of the Hunter’s Moon.

Here’s what October has in store above the Central Coast.

🌌 Notable Sky Events This Month

Saturn at Opposition — October 4

October opens with one of the best opportunities of the year to spot Saturn. On October 4, the ringed planet reaches opposition, meaning Earth sits between Saturn and the Sun, making Saturn appear especially bright and visible throughout the night.

Look toward the eastern sky after sunset for a steady, pale-yellow point of light. With a telescope, you can take a closer look at Saturn’s iconic rings.

Draconid Meteor Shower — October 8–9

The Draconids make an early-October appearance, with peak activity expected around October 8–9. Unlike many meteor showers, the Draconids are best viewed in the evening rather than waiting until the middle of the night.

This year is especially promising for dark-sky viewing, as the shower arrives just before the October 10 New Moon. Head outside after nightfall, get comfortable and keep your eyes on as much of the sky as possible.

Orionid Meteor Shower — October 21–22

Later in the month, the Orionids return with fast, bright meteors created by debris from Halley’s Comet. The shower peaks around October 21–22 and is typically best viewed from around midnight into the early morning hours.

A brighter moon will wash out some of the fainter meteors this year, but you may still catch some of the shower’s brighter streaks from Skyview’s hilltop.

🪐 Planet Watch

This month, keep an eye out for:

  • Saturn – The star of October. Look east after sunset; it will remain visible throughout the night and reaches its brightest around October 4.

  • Mercury – Look low toward the western horizon after sunset around October 12, when Mercury reaches its greatest eastern elongation and is easier to spot.

  • Venus – Venus and Mercury make a close pairing around October 7, appearing low in the western sky shortly after sunset. An unobstructed view toward the horizon will give you the best chance of spotting them.

Guests who want a closer look can enhance their stay with our Unistellar telescope experience, revealing galaxies, nebulae, and planetary details far beyond what the naked eye can see.

🚀 Rocket Launches from Vandenberg

Just up the coast at Vandenberg Space Force Base, rocket launches regularly light up the Central Coast sky.

Several SpaceX Falcon 9 launches are currently scheduled from Vandenberg in October, including missions targeted for October 1, 5 and 10, though launch dates and times can change.

Depending on the trajectory and timing, guests may be able to catch a rocket streaking across the Central Coast sky shortly after liftoff.

Tip: Check the launch schedule during your stay — you might catch one from the pool deck.

🌑 Best Stargazing Nights

For the darkest skies of the month, plan your stargazing around the New Moon on October 10. With virtually no moonlight to compete with the stars, the nights surrounding the New Moon offer some of October’s best conditions for spotting faint stars, meteor showers and deep-sky objects.

The Draconids on October 8–9 are particularly well-timed this year, arriving just before the New Moon and creating a naturally dark backdrop for shooting stars.

Head up to the hillside after dark, settle in and look up — October is one of the last months to catch the Milky Way’s bright core before it fades from evening skies for the season.

🌕 October 24: Moonrise Swim at Skyview

The October Full Moon rises on October 24, bringing the Hunter’s Moon to the sky just in time for spooky season. Traditionally associated with the time of year when hunters prepared for the months ahead, the Hunter’s Moon marks the transition into longer, darker autumn nights.

At Skyview, we’re sending off the season with the final Moonrise Swims of the year. Join us on the pool deck for one last evening of floating, dancing and watching the full moon rise over the valley, with a live DJ set presented by Traffic Records.

Event details:

  • October 24 | Pool Deck at Skyview

  • $35 entry | Complimentary for hotel guests & Nomada members

  • 21+ only | Weather permitting

  • Tarot readings, cocktail specials, and bites from Norman available for purchase
