Each month in Skyview’s Guide to the Sky, we highlight a few things to look for overhead — from meteor showers and bright planets to rocket launches up the coast. Step outside, look up, and let the night put on a show.

☄️ Notable Sky Events This Month
Venus at Its Brightest — September 18–19
Venus puts on one of September’s brightest shows, shining low in the western sky shortly after sunset. Look toward the west as twilight fades for the brilliant planet — one of the easiest celestial sights to spot without a telescope.
Autumnal Equinox — September 22
Fall officially arrives on September 22, when the Sun crosses the celestial equator and day and night are nearly equal in length. It also marks the beginning of longer, darker evenings — perfect timing for settling in beneath the stars.
🪐 Planet Watching
This month, keep an eye out for:
Venus – Brilliant in the western sky just after sunset, especially around mid-month.
Saturn – Rising in the east around sunset by late September and visible throughout the evening.
Jupiter – A bright early-morning sight, rising in the east-northeast before sunrise.
Mars – Visible in the early morning hours, rising in the east-northeast before dawn.

🚀 Rockets Launches from Vandenburg
Just up the coast at Vandenberg Space Force Base, rocket launches regularly light up the Central Coast sky.
Several SpaceX Falcon 9 launches are currently scheduled from Vandenberg in September, including launches on September 6 and September 10, with additional missions currently listed later in the month. Launch times and dates can shift, so check the latest schedule during your stay.

🌑 Best Stargazing Nights
For the darkest skies of the month, plan your stargazing around the New Moon on September 10. With little moonlight washing out the sky, the nights surrounding the New Moon are ideal for spotting fainter stars, star clusters, and distant deep-sky objects.
Head out to the hillside after sunset, give your eyes a few minutes to adjust, and look toward the darkest part of the sky for a better chance at catching the Milky Way.
🌕 September 25: Moonrise Swim at Skyview
The Harvest Moon rises on September 25, bringing one of the most beautiful moonrises of the summer. Traditionally associated with the autumn harvest, its bright light has long marked a season of gathering, transition, and the changing of the seasons.
Celebrate beneath its glow at Moonrise Swims, Skyview's monthly full-moon gathering on the pool deck featuring live DJ sets presented by Traffic Records. Float in the heated pool, sip handcrafted cocktails, enjoy bites from Norman, and watch the moon rise over the Santa Ynez Valley.
