As the highest peak of the Nine Sisters chain, Bishop Peak is one of the most iconic silhouettes along the San Luis Obispo skyline. This trail, albeit challenging, is also one of the most popular in town due to its central location and expansive views — with Morro Bay to the west, downtown below, and the Cuesta Ridge beyond.

Across town from Bishop Peak lies Islay Hill, the southeastern end of the Morro chain. Compared to its big Sisters, Islay may not look as intimidating, but don’t let that fool you — the meandering trail at the base quickly climbs into steep switchbacks that lead to an amazing view (and someone special to share it with). Most hikers finish the trail in an hour or less, so it’s easy to fit into any action-packed weekend.

Johnson Ranch Open Space offers a network of trails that wind through rolling grassy hills on former ranch land. The standard Loop Trail has gentle ups and downs, making for a scenic and varied hike without a strenuous climb.

Nicknamed “Madonna Mountain” by locals, Cerro San Luis sits on a nature preserve behind the famous Madonna Inn. The majority of the trail follows a wide access road, so there’s plenty of room for hikers, bikers, and horseback riders.

Located just off the 101, this city-to-sea trail is a paved, mostly flat pathway that follows the San Luis Obispo Creek into Avila Beach. Tip: If you’re a guest at Granada Hotel, you can borrow a Linus Bike for no charge!
