The Art of the Nightcap, Volume 3: The Sidecar
PART WORKSHOP. PART HAPPY HOUR. PULL UP A STOOL.
Every great cocktail has a moment — the precise shake, the measured pour, the final flourish across the top. The difference between ordinary and exceptional lives in those details.
Art of the Nightcap at Granada Hotel in downtown San Luis Obispo is our invitation to pull up a stool and see how it’s done. This intimate cocktail workshop celebrates the drinks that define the evening. Led by Nightcap’s expert mixologists, each one-hour session spotlights a single cocktail family, sharing the craft, history, and subtle techniques that turn a good drink into a great one — with just a touch of theatre along the way.
Each one-hour session traces a cocktail from its classic roots to Nightcap’s elevated take. Guests will enjoy a guided demonstration, taste components along the way, and end the class with the finished Nightcap creation in hand.
For our third installment on May 27th, we will move to the sidecar— crisp, elegant, and balanced.
Why the Sidecar?
Some cocktails evolve. Others endure. The Sidecar does both—without ever asking for attention.
The Sidecar didn’t just earn its place as a classic—it set a precedent. Built on a precise interplay of spirit, citrus, and structure, it established a formula that would influence generations of cocktails to follow.
Its origins trace back to early 20th-century Europe, but what keeps the Sidecar relevant today is its versatility. Depending on how it’s built, it can lean sharp and refined or softer and more rounded. Subtle shifts in proportion, dilution, or even the decision to rim the glass can completely reshape the experience.
The Lemon Drop is a natural evolution. By shifting the base spirit to vodka and adjusting the balance toward a brighter, more accessible profile, it becomes something entirely modern—same underlying idea, different expression.
This class is designed to connect those dots. Starting with the Sidecar as the foundation, guests will explore how small changes in composition and technique open the door to new interpretations—including a Nightcap special that brings its own perspective to the format.
What to Expect at the Workshop
