The Art of the Nightcap, Volume 5: The Martini
PART WORKSHOP. PART HAPPY HOUR. PULL UP A STOOL.
Every great cocktail has a moment — the precise shake or stir, the measured pour, the final flourish across the top. The difference between ordinary and exceptional lives in those details.
Art of the Nightcap at Granada Hotel in downtown San Luis Obispo is our invitation to pull up a stool and see how it’s done. This intimate cocktail workshop celebrates the drinks that define the evening. Led by Nightcap’s expert mixologists, each one-hour session spotlights a single cocktail family, sharing the craft, history, and subtle techniques that turn a good drink into a great one — with just a touch of theatre along the way.
Each one-hour session traces a cocktail from its classic roots to Nightcap’s elevated take. Guests will enjoy a guided demonstration, taste components along the way, and end the class with the finished Nightcap creation in hand.
For our fifth installment on July 28th and 29th, we will move to the Martini.
Why the Martini?
Some cocktails are built around complexity. The Martini is built around precision.
Defined by just a few ingredients, the Martini has become one of the most iconic cocktails in the world—not because it's elaborate, but because every detail matters. The balance between spirit and fortified wine, the method of preparation, the temperature of the glass, and even the garnish all shape the final experience, leaving no room for error.
What makes the Martini endlessly compelling is how subtle adjustments create entirely different expressions. A drier pour, a touch more vermouth, a splash of olive brine, or a simple lemon twist can transform the cocktail's aroma, texture, and character while preserving its unmistakable identity.
This session begins with the classic Martini as a foundation before exploring the spectrum of styles—from crisp and dry to savory and dirty. Along the way, we'll examine how small changes in ratio, technique, and presentation redefine one of the world's simplest—and most sophisticated—cocktails.
